What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable that destroys fat cells to gradually reduce the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.”

How does it work?

Kybella injections contain a solution of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring acid in the body that breaks down fat. When the deoxycholic acid interacts with the fat cells under your chin, it destroys them and helps the body eliminate them. This results in fewer fat cells under your chin, giving the appearance of a smoother and more beautiful profile.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Mild discomfort may be experienced at the injection sites but we can administer a topical or local anesthetic and ice prior to the treatment to make your treatment more comfortable. Similar to injectable fillers, the discomfort of a Kybella treatment is brief and very manageable.

Kybella treatments usually take 30 minutes or less. Most patients return right back to their routine activities on the same day as their procedure. The neck fat is gradually removed over time, so “final” results are not for several weeks or months, depending on number of desired treatments

Kybella permanently destroys the fat cells it reaches. As long as you avoid weight gain in the future, the results from your treatment are permanent.

It depends on your under-chin area and your profile goals. Some people achieve their desired reduction in submental fullness with just one treatment, but others will need up to six treatments. Each Kybella treatment should be spaced a month apart.

Kybella recovery is usually quick and uneventful. Patients may experience minor bruising and swelling that resolves within several days. A small number of patients experience swelling that worsens before it gets better. Mild discomfort similar to a toothache may be experienced at the injection site, but it is easily treated with over-the-counter pain relievers.

The appearance of the neck and jawline is multifactorial, and a double chin may not be from excess neck fat alone. Patients who have submental fullness from causes other than fat, such as a small chin bone or loose neck skin, may also not be candidates. However, it can be an appropriate option for those patients with isolated neck fat who don’t want surgery. Schedule a consultation with us to find out if Kybella is the right treatment for your skincare goals.

The best thing about Kybella is that it’s less invasive than traditional surgical procedures. You avoid all the risks involved with surgery such as anesthesia and a prolonged downtime. Most patients are able to resume their activities almost immediately following the treatment.
